Zelienople is a small town north of Pittsburgh with many historic landmarks. It sits on the border between Butler and Beaver counties. Much of the area’s traffic comes from visitors to its downtown area, which is home to many small businesses and the town’s annual events, including its 4th of July Parade and the Zelienople Open Air Market.
Hold Your Horses
Every summer, downtown Zelienople holds the annual Horse Trading Days event. It originally started as promotion for the Pennsylvania Amateur Horsemen’s Association, but it has evolved into a weekend-long street fair featuring a vendor fair, pony rides, a petting zoo and more. The festival’s signature event is the Round-Up Horse Parade, which sees horses of all shapes and sizes parading down the streets of downtown Zelienople.
Small-Town Stories
The Zelienople Historical Society has two museums that are open for tours by appointment only and are housed in the two oldest houses in town: the Passavant House (1808) and the Buhl House (1819). The former was actually the house of Zelie Basse, for whom Zelienople is named. These historic houses contain 19th-century furniture, clothing and art, including wreaths made from human hair.
