Encouraging your kids to adapt good tooth-brushing habits at a young age can help them keep their teeth healthy for life. We’ve compiled this guide from several local dental sources, including UPMC Children’s Community Pediatrics.

Birth to 1 year

Wipe down gums and tongue twice a day

Brush first tooth twice a day

Rice-sized amount of toothpaste

Lift lip to check for cavities once a month

First dentist visit

1-3 years

Brush twice a day

Fluoride toothpaste

Kids can choose toothbrush/paste

Story, song or game while brushing

3-6 years

Start brushing for child

Pea-sized amount of toothpaste

Can use electric toothbrush

Ages 6+

Supervise brushing until 7-8 years

Floss regularly

Can use adult toothbrush

2-2-2 rule: Brush twice a day for two minutes; see dentist twice a year
