Summer break is almost here, and there’s a lot to look forward to for families in the Pittsburgh area, from early Fourth of July and America’s 250th celebrations to a new superintendent. Here are some things to keep in mind this June.

Beaver County BOOM

This annual fireworks display is one of the biggest in the region, and this year, Beaver County is aiming to make history for America’s 250th with the biggest boom yet (June 27).

Back to School

Point Park University, Seton Hill University and the Community College of Allegheny County are among several local colleges to receive Parent Pathways grants to help parents earn college degrees.

Patriotic Pop

As part of Pennsylvania’s America250 celebration, Pittsburgh will host one of five free concerts taking place across the state. The Pittsburgh show (June 27) features Nelly and Third Eye Blind.

Superintendent Shuffle

The North Allegheny School District’s assistant superintendent of secondary education David Deramo will begin his role as the district’s new superintendent July 1, following Superintendent Brendan Hyland’s retirement.

Temporary Traffic

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation encourages Pittsburgh drivers to plan ahead for a full closure of The Parkway East (July 10 – Aug. 3) for the replacement of the Commercial Street Bridge — a $95 million project.
