Once known as “Guntown,” Canonsburg was a hub of activity for the coal and steel industry. One of the Washington County borough’s largest claims to fame is the Canonsburg Fourth of July Parade, which is the second-largest in the state, beaten only by Philadelphia’s parade. It’s so popular that locals will place chairs along the parade route weeks in advance to reserve their spots.
Downtown Delights
Canonsburg’s downtown area is home to many charming, locally-owned shops and restaurants, making it a great place to go for a stroll and do some window-shopping. There are events held there throughout the year, like street markets and art fairs. One of Canonsburg’s most famous natives, singer Perry Como, has been memorialized with a statue located there — during the holiday season, he’s given a hat and a scarf.
Life is Sweet
Canonsburg is the home base of Sarris Candies, a specialty candy company first started by a local out of the basement of his home. While Sarris Candies creations can be found at stores across the country, the original Sarris Candy Store & Ice Cream Parlor is the perfect place to enjoy some sweet treats. The store is also home to the Chocolate Castle, a 12-foot tall candy sculpture complete with a flowing chocolate moat.
