Exploring Pittsburgh on a budget can be a challenge if you have parents, grandparents, siblings and other family members to accommodate. But the Allegheny Regional Asset District (RAD) announced an expansion of its a popular local discount program, RAD Pass, last month.
The program, which gives Allegheny County library cardholders free or discounted admission to many cultural destinations in Pittsburgh, is now available year-round.
RAD’s impetus behind expanding the program is based in its mission to increase access to arts and culture. Families using the RAD Pass can attend performances from the Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre, Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra and Pittsburgh Public Theater, to name a few, with initiatives such as RAD Days, “3 for Free” and others that offer free or discounted admission.
RAD partnered with the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh and other Allegheny County Library Association libraries to help manage the platform and give residents access to library cards.
Allegheny County’s 1% sales tax is the primary funding source of the program, according to a news release. Since its establishment, RAD has invested more than $2.5 billion in regional assets using half of the proceeds from Allegheny County’s additional 1% sales and use tax.
An additional $2.5 billion was allotted for the county and its 128 municipalities for property tax relief and local government services, the release states.
