Pittsburgh Parent wins Gold for Editorial Excellence in Journalism

Pittsburgh Parent magazine has received a Gold medal and national recognition for Overall Editorial Excellence in the 2015 Parenting Media Association (PMA) annual Editorial and Design Competition. A total of over 600 entries were submitted for competition this year with Pittsburgh Parent winning three Gold and two Bronze medals.

According to the judge who awarded Gold Medal to Pittsburgh Parent Editor Patricia Poshard: “Whether it’s suggesting how to handle teen-aged angst or celebrating the parenting prowess of a major league baseball player, the writing fits the content. It is consistently conversational. A reader feels connected to the writer and, even better, to the subject.”

A second Gold in the travel feature category went to the June 2014 cover story “Staycations: Beyond your backyard” which was developed by Editor Poshard and written by Pittsburgh freelance writer and author Mj Calloway (Mary Jo Rulnick). The November cover story “You Know Your Child Best. Period. End of Story” by Gibsonia writer Kristi Wees received a Bronze Medal as a service feature.

A third Gold went to Editor Poshard for cover lines which “are straightforward and easy to understand, quickly relying subject matter to draw readers inside to the stories.”

Around & About Pittsburgh was recognized with a Bonze Medal for Ancillary Overall Writing – written by local freelancer Mj Calloway and edited by Poshard.

The annual PMA Editorial and Design Competition recognizes excellence in journalism, photography and design achieved in parenting publications. The contest is coordinated and entries judged by Professor Daryl Moen of the University of Missouri School of Journalism.
