Parent assistance is available
The Local Task Force on the Right to Education in Allegheny County (LTF3) serves as a resource for children with all disabilities and their families in the 42 school districts in Allegheny County. Their role is to communicate needs and problems to the appropriate sources. The local task force is made up of parents, professionals, educators and agency representatives. They hold monthly meetings the first Wednesday of every month (except July and August) at the Allegheny Intermediate Unit offices in the Waterfront in Homestead from 7-9pm.
The local task force provides a Parent Assistance Line (412-394-5930) and takes part in the state cyclical monitoring of school districts. There are speakers that are occasionally scheduled at the monthly meetings, and each spring there is a banquet that recognizes the outstanding efforts of a local school, classroom and student in the area of special education.
Following is the schedule for speakers:
- October 2, 2013 Mary Figlar – Topic: Dept. of Human Services/Office of Intellectual Disabilities/Office of Developmental Programs & Family Resource Guide
- November 6, 2013 Dori Anderson from AIU3 – Topic: Apps for Smart Phones, Ipads and Iphones
- December 4, 2013 Mary Hartley of 21&Able/United Way – Topic: Transition/Housing
