In honor of Mother’s Day coming up, Pittsburgh’s Mad Science is offering free online experiments for kids to do at-home with their mom! I’d like to connect you with one of their mad scientists to discuss how Moms can get creative in the home with their little ones using ordinary household items and spend the day exploring science together!

Some experiments available include:

Thaumatrope: Thaumatrope means “wonder turner”, this design with a heart outline on one side and picture of mom/family on the other, so when you spin it the heart outline is around the image

  • What you need: string, scissors, pencil, glue stick and printed image of Mom/Family
  • What’s happening: phenomenon called “persistence of vision”

Water Symphony: Kids can put on a musical talent show for Mom

  • What you need: 5 tall glasses, measuring cup, water, wooden spoon, food coloring (to add some creative design!)
  • What’s happening: sound travels in waves by vibrating atoms

Build a Smartphone Projector: A creative family movie night for Mother’s Day

  • What you need: shoebox, magnifying glass, scissors, tape, cell phone
  • What’s happening: create your own in-home projector using household items

Mad Science will also be updating this link every few days to keep the learning going at-home for kids and parents! Each experiment has instructions along with a video.

When can I connect you with a mad scientist to further discuss these experiments to do with mom this Mother’s Day? Please let me know and I’m happy to coordinate, thanks!
