County Parks Seeking Lifeguards for 2017 Pool Season



The Allegheny County Parks Department is seeking qualified applicants, ages 16 and older, to fill lifeguard positions at pools in Boyce, North, Settlers Cabin and South parks for the 2017 pool season, which is scheduled June 3-September 4. Candidates must be willing to work the entire season, including flexible hours, weekends and holidays.
Guards will be paid on the following scale: $11 per hour for first-year lifeguards; $11.50 per hour for senior lifeguards (employed with the county for two or more seasons); $12 per hour for assistant head lifeguards; and $13 per hour for head lifeguards. Guards will also be eligible for the following bonuses and incentives:
Labor Day Bonus – All guards who work through Labor Day weekend will receive an additional $0.50 for every hour worked during the 2017 pool season.
Recruitment Incentive – For each new lifeguard recruited by a non-management pool employee, the recruiter will be compensated an additional $0.50 for every hour worked by their recruit(s) during the 2017 season. Recruiters must work the entire season to be eligible to earn the recruitment incentive.
Candidates must complete an aquatics test 9:00 a.m.-12:00 noon on Saturday, April 15, or 9:00 a.m.-12:00 noon on Saturday, May 6. Both exams will take place at North Allegheny High School located at 10375 Perry Highway in McCandless Twp. Prior to the aquatics test, all applicants must present a doctor’s certification form, employment application and permission to investigate form. No aquatics test will be given without the required documentation.
Prior to May 27, candidates must also present current lifeguard, first aid and CPR certifications. For those without certification, the parks department is offering two-day American Red Cross blended learning lifeguard courses, which combine online knowledge acquisition and in-person water, first aid and CPR/AED training. The first two-day certification course will take place 10:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m. on April 29 and 8:00 a.m.-2:00 p.m. on April 30. A second two-day certification course will take place 10:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m. on May 13 and 8:00 a.m.-2:00 p.m. on May 14. Both courses will be held at North Allegheny High School and are open to ages 15 and older. The cost is $75 for county residents and $93 for non-residents.
