Whether your child is studying for an upcoming test or caught in the middle of an intense game of freeze tag, consuming the right foods are essential. The brain is a very hungry organ and it’s one of the first in the body to consume nutrients from what we eat. So, it’s important to put the right things in your child’s body.

Brain foods are superfoods that tend to improve brain function, memory and concentration. These foods can help your child be more alert during class so they retain more and give them the energy to perform physical activities on the playground. Below are some brain foods to keep in mind next time you’re at the grocery store and even some fun recipes to share with your child.

  • Berries. Berries are loaded with antioxidants and vitamin C. They tend to improve memory and are a good source of omega-3 fats. Try adding berries to yogurt or their favorite hot and cold cereals.
  • Milk and yogurt. Dairy foods are full of protein and vitamin B, which are essential for the growth of brain tissue, neurotransmitters and enzymes. Try making low-fat parfaits. In a glass, layer yogurt with berries and some chopped nuts.
  • Eggs. Not only are eggs a great source of protein, which is great for developing bodies, but egg yolks also are loaded with choline, which helps memory development. Try making an egg sandwich at home. Just put a fried egg on top of a toasted english muffin with cooked bacon or deli ham and top with a slice of their favorite cheese.
  • Whole grains. Whole grains are a great way to give your brain the constant supply of glucose it needs to function. The fiber from whole grains regulate the release of glucose in the body and also provides vitamin B, which help grow a healthy nervous system. Try using whole-grain bread for sandwiches and whole-grain tortillas for quesadillas, wraps and snacks.

These brain foods will not only help your child get the nutrients they need during their development years, but also set a good example for them in the future so they can live a healthy and successful life.
