Awesome, Cool, Wow! We won Gold again!

We Won a Gold Medal again! Honey Hill Publishing and Pittsburgh Parent, celebrating over 30 years as the only “hometown parenting magazine” focused on families, has received a Gold medal and national recognition in the 2018 Parenting Media Association (PMA) annual Editorial and Design Competition. Pittsburgh Parent won Gold for our September cover story on Dating Violence from a total of over 600 entries submitted for competition this year.

The contest entries are judged at the University of Missouri School of Journalism. The Gold medal was awarded to the September 2018 cover story, “What you and your teen need to know about dating violence”, written by Jill L. Ferguson, designed by Kerri Lutz and edited Patricia Poshard. According to the judges, “This package quickly explains the life-or-death importance of the topic by telling the story of a Pittsburgh teen murdered by her boyfriend. With ample reporting and clear writing, the stories provide parents with vital resources, warning signs and other critical information. It is a strong, complete and necessary feature.”

Our Silver medal recognized a story in the August 2018 issue “Kids are snorting WHAT?”, written by Ann K. Howley with design by Kerri Lutz. The judges commented,  “Children often do the strangest things with the sole intent of grabbing attention. The age-old phenomenon is put into perspective using the latest example: snorting condoms. Quick and easy to read, the author’s work makes readers smarter and wiser without worrying them too much.”

“Around and About Pittsburgh”, designed by Kerri Lutz, won a Bronze for the cover. According to judges, “The illustration and typography complement each other, reinforcing the mood of the cover. Outgoing and energetic families are likely to identify with this bright and cheerful presentation.”

Throughout the years we have been honored to receive awards annually for Pittsburgh Parent, Around & About Pittsburgh and www.pittsburghparent.com for our overall excellence in both editorial and design. The annual PMA Editorial and Design Competition recognizes excellence in journalism, photography, design, websites and social media achieved in parenting publications and media.

I am truly blessed to work with some very talented and creative people. Jill Ferguson was raised and educated in Pittsburgh and is now an author of books for kids and adults, an artist, and coordinates Wellness Weekends for women on the west coast. She has been writing for us for over 25 years. Ann Howley came on board with us a few years ago. She also has published a book as well as teaches writing classes.

Kerri Lutz, daughter of Publisher Lynn Honeywill and granddaughter of founder Marilyn Honeywill, joined us in the office in production in 2014. She went back to school and got a degree in graphic design and is my “partner in crime” getting the magazine out each month, keeping our website up-to-date and working in social media.

Congratulations to us!
