County Parks Seeking Lifeguards for 2018 Pool Season

Guards can earn $11-$13 per hour plus bonuses and incentives




The Allegheny County Parks Department is seeking qualified applicants, ages 16 and older, to fill lifeguard positions at its pools in Boyce, North, Settlers Cabin and South parks for the 2018 pool season, which is scheduled for June 2-September 3. Candidates must successfully pass an aquatics test and background check and be willing to work the entire season, including flexible hours, weekends and holidays. Returning lifeguards in good standing and applicants ages 18 and older will be given first preference.

 

Guards will be paid on the following hourly scale: $11 for first-year lifeguards; $11.50 for senior lifeguards (employed with the county for two or more seasons); $12 for assistant head lifeguards; and $13 for head lifeguards. Guards will also be eligible for the following bonuses and incentives:

 

  • Labor Day Bonus – All guards who work through Labor Day weekend will receive an additional $0.50 for every hour worked during the 2018 pool season.

 

  • Recruitment Incentive – For each new lifeguard recruited by a non-management pool employee, the recruiter will be compensated an additional $0.50 for every hour worked by their recruit(s) during the 2018 season. Recruiters must work the entire season to be eligible to earn the recruitment incentive.

 

Candidates must successfully complete an aquatics test that includes seven skills outlined on the Lifeguard Aquatics Test website. Testing will be conducted at the following times at North Allegheny High School located at 10375 Perry Highway in McCandless Twp.:

  • 9:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 31;
  • 3:00-9:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 21;
  • 3:00-9:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 5; and
  • 3:00-9:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 19.

 

Prior to taking the aquatics test, all applicants must present a doctor’s certification form, employment application and permission to investigate form. No aquatics test will be given without the required documentation. 

 

The parks department is offering a free four-session aquatics test practice course, which takes place 6:00-7:00 p.m. on March 20, 22, 27 and 29 at Oliver Citywide Academy located at 2323 Brighton Road on the North Side. Pre-registration for the free course is required online.

 

Prior to May 28, candidates must also present current lifeguard, first aid and CPR certifications. For those without certification, the parks department is offering a two-day American Red Cross blended learning lifeguard course, which combines online learning and in-person water, first aid and CPR/AED training. The certification course, which is open to ages 15 and older, will take place 8:00 a.m.-2:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 12, and 12:00 noon-7:00 p.m. on Sunday, May 13, at North Allegheny High School. The cost is $100 for county residents and $125 for non-residents. Successful participants will receive a two-year American Red Cross Lifeguard Certification. Pre-registration for the lifeguard certification courses is required online. Additional certification courses may be found on the Red Cross Lifeguard & Water Safety Training website.
