Health Department Announces Annual Environmental Poster Contest

2015-2016 Environmental Poster Contest Winner: Seventh-grader Steven Costa of St. Maria Goretti School

The Allegheny County Health Department (ACHD) is continuing its tradition of holding an environmental poster contest for students in grades 6 thru 8. This will be the Health Department’s 19th year holding the contest.

This year’s theme is, “Healthy Environment, Healthy Bodies.” Students are encouraged to think about both large and small-scale solutions to protecting our environment and health. Posters should highlight their ideas and solutions, and each poster will be judged on creativity, accuracy of information, and the strength of the message.

“This is a terrific opportunity for students to learn about the things that impact our environment and our health, and to share their thoughts and ideas with us,” said Dr. Karen Hacker, ACHD Director. “We encourage students in grades 6 thru 8 to participate, and we look forward to seeing their innovative and creative ideas.”

The top-three winners will be announced on Friday, April 20, 2018, in conjunction with Earth Day celebrations. The winning posters will also be featured on the Health Department’s web site:

Teachers who would like to have their classes participate in the poster contest should visit the Health Department’s environmental poster contest website: or contact Tony Sadar of the Health Department’s Air Quality Program at: 412-578-8125 or

The deadline for entries is Friday, March 9, 2018. The top-three winning students will receive a $75 gift card to Barnes and Noble. The teachers of the winning students will also receive a $50 gift card to Staples.
